Harmony Aikido – Teen Self-Defense
Aikido Self-Defense is more than just a martial art. It’s a practice in self-awareness, cooperation, and self-control. At Harmony Aikido, we’ve seen how this nonviolent discipline helps teens grow into confident, grounded, and compassionate young people.
In our teen classes, these core Aikido principles are taught in a safe, positive, and supportive learning environment.

- Self-Confidence Without Aggression – Gain confidence while handling challenges calmly and respectfully.
- Mind-Body Coordination – Build balance, strength, and spatial awareness in a safe setting.
- Personal Self-Defense Skills – Learn age-appropriate techniques to stay safe in real-world situations.
- Stress Management – Practice breathing, mindfulness, and relaxation skills.
- Respect and Cooperation – Foster teamwork, listening skills, and personal accountability.
- Community and Belonging – Be part of a supportive, inclusive dojo environment.
And let’s not forget: It’s an amazing mind-body workout that leaves students energized and smiling!
A Martial Art That Teaches More Than Techniques
Unlike competitive sports, Aikido teaches teens how to respond to conflict without aggression. Students learn:
- How to fall safely, get back up, and move with awareness and confidence.
- How to stay calm, de-escalate conflict, and avoid overreacting.
- How to practice self-respect and respect for others.
- How to become productive and contributing members of society.
- How to work as a team to learn Aikido self-defense techniques.
- How to practice and demonstrate empathy.
These life skills help teens navigate challenges both at school and at the dojo.
Aikido does not rely on brute physical strength or rigid practice routines. It is ideal for teens who want to improve their physical, emotional, intellectual, and social well-being.
A Safe, Inclusive Learning Environment
At Harmony Aikido, we have extensive experience working with teens. Our instructors are certified black belts in the art of Aikido.
The head instructor, Sensei Oliver Johnson, is a 4th-degree black belt, a retired Health Science teacher, and holds a Master’s degree in Public Health Administration.
Our dojo is a welcoming place where all students are treated with care and respect. Classes are structured, supervised, and paced to support each teen’s individual needs.
There are no competitive contests, winners, or losers in Aikido.
